What are Period Delay tablets?
Period delay tablets are commonly prescribed to temporarily delay menstruation. These tablets contain the synthetic progesterone, Norethisterone and are used for various reasons, such as adjusting the timing of a period for personal, medical, or lifestyle reasons.
How Period Delay Tablets Work:
-
Progesterone Mimic: Period delay tablets, like Norethisterone, work by mimicking the natural hormone progesterone, which helps regulate the menstrual cycle. When you take the tablets, they prevent the shedding of the uterine lining, which delays the onset of your period.
-
Timing: These tablets are typically taken 3 days before the expected period and continued for up to 14 days (usually 5-10 days). The usual dose is 1 pill 3 times a day. After you stop taking them, the drop in progesterone levels triggers menstruation and usually returns within 3 days of finishing the course. If you take norethisterone less than 3 days before your period is due, then it's unlikely to delay your period and may experience a bleed.
Common Uses:
-
Delaying Periods for Special Events: Women may use period delay tablets when they don’t want their period to coincide with an important event like a vacation or wedding.
Active Ingredients:
Norethisterone the is a man-made version of progesterone. It works by keeping the levels of progesterone high to stop the womb lining from shedding and causing a period.
Utovlan is the branded version of norethisterone and contains the same active ingredient.
Potential Side-effects:
-
Temporary Effect: The delay is temporary, and after stopping the medication, the period will typically arrive within a few days.
-
Side Effects: Common side effects can include nausea, mood changes, headaches, or breast tenderness. These side effects are usually mild and short-lived.
-
Not for Everyone: It's important to confirm you are not pregnant before using these tablets, as they are not safe during pregnancy.
